why are we doing this?

Our passion and love for the West Coast of Scotland, the Sunart Peninsula and the village of Strontian inspired us to move our family here in 2020.

With its geology, its history, its ecology and folklore and more importantly the people and community here, this inspired us along with our love of the Scottish Gin industry to launch The Strontian Distillery.

We are so grateful and excited to be able to call Strontian our home; that our children will spend their entire childhoods growing up here.  We have been inspired to create a product that reflects and celebrates the natural wonders, the history and the people of Strontian.

a wee bit about us

When the world changed in 2020, we were given the nudge we needed to finally move our wee family from the East coast of Scotland to the West Coast of the Scottish Highlands, which has always had an inexplicable and mystical hold over us. We moved to the village of Strontian, on the Sunart Peninsula by Ardnamurchan, and four years later, we think we’re beginning to understand that hold a little better.  What a place it is!

We are Graeme and Vicki; a husband and wife team. A couple of years ago, inspired by our new surroundings, and its stories, Graeme had the idea for a new Scottish Gin called “Sr38”. Sr38 is the symbol on the periodic table which represents Strontium. A new species of Earth was discovered in the mines above Strontian in the 18th Century and this was named Strontianite after the village. And from Strontianite they managed to isolate Strontium, a new chemical element. Graeme envisaged Sr38 in an apothecary-style bottle with a tea-stained label. The seed for our new business was planted!

As we started researching the Scottish gin industry, the recipe & development of locally foraged potential ingredients, as well as Strontian itself, two things became clear:

Strontian, its geology, its history, its ecology and its folklore cannot possibly be represented by only ONE drink or product.  The idea to create FOUR signature gins; one to represent each of the natural elements seemed to become startlingly obvious.

And secondly, this idea was bigger than just us.  The community within Strontian is extraordinary.  Not only has our family been welcomed unreservedly to the area, this community’s achievements are astonishing.  With that in mind, this new project should enhance sustainability of the region by supporting the local economy and the community.

The spirits

Instead of launching our Distillery with just one new Scottish gin, we are launching with FOUR unique Scottish gins. We couldn’t decide on which of Strontian’s themes to highlight first, and when we realised they each represented one of the four Natural Elements, the decision was made for us; To create a collection of FOUR gins.

Why Crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding, apparently, is “the process of asking for financial support from a large number of people”. But, we hope that in this case, it is a whole lot more than that.

To date, we have happily spent a large amount of our own money to get our plans to this current stage. We are also asking for support from Business Gateway and from Highlands & Islands Enterprise, regarding various aspects of the new business.

So far, we have been mostly investing in the branding for our new business, and in the all-important Recipe and Development of our first four gins. The tasting sessions have been particularly strenuous….!

Our vision (with your help)

Our short-term plan, and with your help, is to purchase our own handcrafted Scottish Still (Forsyths Ltd), and to build a new space in our own back garden from which Graeme will distill our gin, our rum, and eventually other spirits too. We have already created a little office space in an outbuilding from which Vicki can operate the administration/marketing side of things.

We will start by distributing online from here in the heart of Strontian (right at the foot of Tom an t- Sithein, Strontian’s Fairy Hill).  To begin with, our website will become our little online shop. We have been talking to many local craftspeople about selling their own handcrafted products as part of The Strontian Distillery range of merchandise.  We hope to offer hand-painted glasses, and coasters, hand-drawn maps, printed mugs, hoodies, tshirts, hats and more.  The creative talent in and around Strontian is astounding, and we are delighted to be able to provide another outlet for as many local craftspeople as possible.  We would like as many local people as possible to benefit from this new business.

If successful in producing and distributing spirits to symbolise and celebrate the wonder that is Strontian, we will be quick to expand!  We have been talking to people in Strontian’s hospitality industry from whom we would rent a space which would become The Strontian Distillery’s Shop and Tasting Station.  We would hope to offer little tours and hospitality packages in the future, which would also help showcase some of the other wonderful businesses in Strontian.

Again, with your help to build this business, we hope to provide future work experience opportunities for pupils of Ardnamurchan High School here in Strontian, and more employment within the village.

The response to our new business from locals, has so far been very positive, and we have even received offers of people growing botanicals in their own poly tunnels to contribute towards our recipes!

Soon after making Strontian our home, Graeme signed up to become a retained firefighter for our local area, and Vicki now assists at the local High School as a Youth Worker specialising in Drama. Community is so important to us, particularly this incredible community, and we think everyone here is entitled to shout about how extraordinary Strontian is. And we’d like you to feel part of that too!

Strontian: The place we call home

Strontian (pronounced Stron-tee-uhn) is the main village in Sunart, by the Ardnamurchan peninsula in Western Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands. The multitude of impressive facts about Strontian are the inspiration behind our Distillery and behind every single one of our products.

Where else in the world might you find the following, all in one place:

  • A Temperate Rainforest
  • The discovery site of a chemical element
  • The bay in which a floating church was anchored
  • A place name which, in Gaelic, translates into “Nose of The Fairy Hill”
  • Scotland’s first Community-built Primary School
  • An impressive Community Hydro Scheme
  • And the list goes on and on…….!
